Speaker: Yao-Rui Yeo

Abstract:

Music is a branch of performing arts (together with things like theater and dance). From a scientific perspective, music is just repeatedly abusing the wave equation to organize noise. In this lighthearted talk, we will discuss some math behind music, with demonstrations using musical instruments. In particular, short excerpts of well-known pieces will be played to illustrate various mathematical principles.
