Abstract:

Morse theory provides a quite intuitive way of studying and recovering the topology of a manifold by looking at special smooth functions that it admits. We will discuss how this apparatus works by presenting the main ideas and hinting out what technical issues might arise. As an application of the theory, we will deduce the classification of compact surfaces. If time permits, we will discuss some further topics adjacent to morse theory.
