Course Description
This course is designed for those who have taken CHIN 0100 or equivalent. The course aims to help you continue building a solid foundation of the FOUR language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese. Critical components of such a function include mastery of basic grammatical structures, correct pronunciation, accurate tones and relevant knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture. Reading and writing skills will receive more instructional attention in this course than in CHIN 0100 (Beginning Chinese I). By the end of the semester, you will be able to handle many situations that have immediate concern to you, including relating past experiences; requesting and providing information on time, location and duration of events; making promise or compromise; expressing preferences and feelings; making inquiries and commands; purchasing goods in a store; ordering food in a restaurant; asking for and giving directions, including taking mass transit; discussing feasibility of actions; discussing basic travel plans; making basic comparisons and contrasts of various objects or opinions; relating simple information about career choices; giving short narratives that explain or relate a situation; relating weather conditions.
