Due to the extraordinary situation of COVID-19 we have made the decision to host this 2020 edition online and therefore, to make a new call for proposals.

Since 2016, the Andean Research Proseminar has offered a convivial opportunity for scholars from different disciplines residing in different countries to get to know each other, reconnect and develop relationships outside of the university and conference settings. In light of the COVID-19 crisis, we decided to host this virtual gathering with a focus on its workshop format, as an opportunity to offer peer-to-peer support and feedback, and to continue strengthening the vibrant Andean Studies community despite the current circumstances.

The two previous editions of the seminar took place in Cusco, Peru (2016, 2018). The third was expected to be in Quito, Ecuador. For this special virtual edition, we are still working in collaboration with Universidad San Francisco de Quito, FLACSO Ecuador, the University of Pennsylvania, and Northwestern University. The sessions will now be on July 17th and 18th, 2020.

During this two-day gathering, sessions will take place in the following way:

Plenary sessions
Presenters will prepare 5-minute presentations. The goal is that everyone can get a chance to provide context for their research, although data and preliminary analyses will be shared to your small groups prior to the meeting. Participants can present a work-in-progress article/essay or collected data.

Small-group sessions
Additionally to the plenary session, each presenter will meet with an assigned small group of participants to receive feedback, questions, and comments on their research. Prior to the Proseminar, the presenter will have provided the research paper or data to be analyzed so other participants in the group can read it. Text and/or data must be shared 2 weeks before the gathering. If we do not receive your paper or data in time, the organization committee will have to rescind your invitation to the meeting. Texts which exceed the page limit will be cut before distribution. Each small-group session will have a moderator. This format can only work if presenters and the audience read the works from their assigned groups.

Submissions will be accepted until Sunday, June 14th, 2020. Please send all submissions to Marlén Rosas mrosas@sas.upenn.edu including the following info: full name, institution, short bio, type of submission (Work-in-progress or data analysis), e-mail. Due to the small-group interactions we request you to indicate what languages you feel comfortable participating in (reading in/commenting on): Spanish, English or both. Rolling admission to the event will be available on a case-by-case basis, reaching out to the organizing committee.

Presentation formats

  • Data Analysis Workshops: Share data and materials in order to explore different analytic strategies with others in the group. We invite participants to submit: audio transcripts, interview fragments, fieldwork notes, ethnographic vignettes, videos, other artifacts or platforms, etc. The length should be no more than 4 pages for texts and 6 minutes for audio/video.
  • Work-in-progress paper : A text that the presenter is working on, recently finished pieces, and those at any stage of the writing process are welcome, from early works to polished pieces. Texts must be shared 2 weeks before the gathering and will have a limit of 10-14 pages (double-spaced). Texts that exceed the page limit will be cut before distribution.
