Downtown Bookworks is a boutique children’s publishing company with a mission to keep kids engaged in reading, and in the outside world; to spark their imaginations, and to encourage curiosity. From DC superhero books to do-it-myself craft kits to our Science with Stuff series (each title is packaged with a pocket treasure such as shark teeth or space rocks), Downtown Bookworks’ books and kits are designed to be fun, educational, beautiful, and to feel good in small hands.
In our sunny, downtown space, we turn concepts into manuscripts and then into high quality finished products, paying lots of attention to every tiny detail throughout the process.
What to expect
We are a small and relatively young business, and we work in a scrappy and unique way which will appeal if you are smart, resourceful, and eager to learn everything there is to know about children’s book publishing — from coming up with publishable ideas, to shaping content, to figuring out how to reach the target buyer. Our office is an open loft in Soho (downtown Manhattan). So no cubicles (or even doors); no HR department; no corporate hierarchy. We are a handful of creative, hard-working editorially-minded people who wear many hats every day and invent our jobs as we go. Your desk is right next to mine, so there is plenty of learning by osmosis. And my adorable dog may fall asleep on your feet.
The 4 Day/Week Summer Internship Will Involve:
- Research and writing on a range of subjects from history, science, and nature to kids’ crafts and activities
- Editing, fact-checking, and proofreading
- Marketing and publicity through social and digital media as well as print
- Photo research and compiling art and photo logs
- Even arts and crafts projects, components sourcing, and much more
Who We are Looking For
Our dream candidate is creative, detail-oriented, technically savvy, and easygoing. The office is busy and buzzing — an excellent place to dive in and really learn the business by doing a bit of everything.
