RERC Summer School

Rare Earth Research Conference Summer School

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
June 25-26, 2022
(Fully Funded Opportunity!)

Have you ever wondered what underlies the chemistry of your smart phones or speakers? What about the chemistry of renewable energy technologies, such as those found in electric cars or wind-turbines? How could small molecules be used to generate stable imaging agents, sensors, or catalysts that can enable applications in medicine and the chemical industry? Perhaps you’re curious about emerging applications in quantum computing, information, and sensing? Or you’ve always wondered about the unique properties of the elements at the bottom of the periodic table? If you’ve said yes to any of these questions, this is the opportunity for you!

Applications are now being received for a special summer school in rare earth and quantum science in connection with the 29th Rare Earth Research Conference (RERC) to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from June 26-29 (https://web.sas.upenn.edu/rerc29/). Participants can also attend the RERC if their schedule permits.

10 – 20 undergraduate students (chemistry and physics majors) will be fully funded to attend this June 25-26 instructional program prior to the RERC. Interested undergraduates should have completed an undergraduate inorganic chemistry course by the time of the event, and those considering graduate school are strongly encouraged to apply. This is a great opportunity to learn about exciting developing areas of chemistry and quantum science while spending a fully funded weekend in the historic part of Philadelphia.

The summer school will include eight lectures by prominent chemists from around the world during the day on Saturday and on Sunday morning. The lectures will cover the chemistry and applications of the rare earth elements, including applications in quantum science. These are topics that are normally not covered in undergraduate curricula, so this is a great opportunity. No prior knowledge of rare earth metal chemistry is needed.

The application form is here and should be sent to Ms. Jenise Shourds at jshourds@uci.edu by May 15. All applications need to be supported by a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and a copy of a recent transcript (need not be an official copy).
