SOCI430 – KOREAN CULTURE AND SOCIETY

How can we understand South Korea through data? In this course, we will learn Korean culture and society by using a variety of sources of data (e.g., facts, statistics, information, surveys). South Korea has undergone enormous changes through rapid economic growth and democratization during the last half of the century. With an emphasis on these major changes and the enduring impacts, we will discuss the distinctive characteristics of Korean culture and society, compared to other East Asian and global societies. In particular, we will explore fundamental themes in the understanding of Korean society such as Confucianism, modernization, industrialization, democratization, and globalization. Also, various contemporary social issues and changes will be discussed (e.g., social class, gender, education, family, cyberculture, popular culture) from a sociological perspective. This course has no specific prerequisites.
