Graduate students are eligible to enroll, but please note that undergraduate course codes begin with 0 or 1 (e.g., 0100 or 1045), while graduate course codes begin with 5 or 6 (e.g., 5100 or 6045).

Fall 2024 Korea Day @ Penn with Democracy Prep Bronx High School

Friday, November 8, 2024 – 9:00am

The Penn Korean Language Program and the James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies are excited to announce Korea Day at Penn – a special event for Democracy Prep Bronx High School students on November 8th 2024. The event will feature campus and library tours, mentorship sessions with Penn students from Korean language classes, a special lecture and information sessions on Korean and East Asian studies, and a cultural workshop where students can immerse themselves in the vibrant culture, language, and traditions of Korea!

This event is supported by the Core University Program for Korean Studies of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and Korean Studies Promotion Service at the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS-2023-OLU-2250002) and cosponsored by the Center for East Asian Studies.

Penn Students Win at the 3rd Mid-Atlantic Korean Speech Contest

Three students from the Penn Korean Language Program participated in the third Mid-Atlantic Korean Speech Contest and won the following awards:

Heejoon Shin won the First Place Award (Level 3) for his speech, “Beyond Academics: The Power of Undergraduate Research Experience,” earning a $1,000 scholarship. Cat Nguyen won the Third Place Award (Level 2) for her speech, “Finding Happiness,” earning a $500 scholarship.  Kwun Hang Henry Chung received a Regional Finalist Certificate (Level 1) for his speech, “Friendship Knows No Borders.”

PMA Field Trip: Explore "The Shape of Time: Korean Art after 1989"

Korean Language Program is organizing a field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to explore “The Shape of Time: Korean Art after 1989” exhibition, the first major display of contemporary Korean art in a U.S. museum in over a decade. The exhibit features the works of 28 Korean artists, born between 1960 and 1986, and illustrates South Korea’s growing global influence and its process of reconciling with its historical past. RSVP by Thursday February 1st 12PM.

Penn Global Seminar Spring 2024: Explore Korean Language and Culture!

Discover Korean language and culture in our inaugural Penn Global Seminar (PGS) titled “Korean Language and Culture: Beginning II and Intermediate II,” available in Spring 2024. This unique opportunity combines intensive, semester-long language study with a short-term excursion to Seoul and Gyeongju, South Korea. Just like standard language courses, this PGS course will fulfill your language requirements. Eligible applicants include students who have successfully completed Beginning I or Intermediate Korean I.

Please join us to prepare and savor Kimbap on Friday, November 3rd in Williams Hall 623. The workshop will consist of two sessions, one at 4 PM and the other at 4:45 PM. RSVP at your earliest convenience, as spots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of 60 available spots.

Now Accepting 2023-24 James Joo-JIn Kim Center Undergraduate Fellow Applications

The James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies is pleased to announce the Undergraduate Fellow Award, aimed at students who are involved in the study of Korea and interested in active participation in the university’s Korean Studies program. The Kim Center will recruit up to five (5) Undergraduate Fellows for the 2023–2024 academic year. Fellows will be selected on the basis of academic merits and demonstrated interest in Korean Studies. 

2023 AATK Annual Conference Held at Penn

The Korean Language Program at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is pleased to announce that the Annual American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK)’s 28th Annual Conference and Professional Workshop will take place on June 15-17, 2023, at Penn. The theme of the 28th conference is ‘Transformative Language Learning Through Real World Engagement.’ With this theme, the conference aims to provide a forum for Korean language students through constructive discussions about transformative learning and its extension to the real world. We invite participants to explore and address these areas of interest to foster an engaging and enriching experience.

2 Years in a Row! Two Penn Students Won Awards at the Mid-Atlantic Speech Contest

On April 1, 2023, two students from Penn received awards at the 2nd Mid-Atlantic Korean Speech Contest, marking the second year in a row that Penn students have received recognition at the event. This is a remarkable achievement for the program and the university as a whole. The competition saw 22 Korean language students from 10 different schools competing across three levels. The three Penn students who were selected to compete, Smriti Sanjay-Gopal, Charlotte Fox, and Katie Oh, put up an impressive performance at the contest. Smriti Sanjay-Gopal won second place in the Level 1: Personal Experience section, while Charlotte Fox secured second place in the Level 2: Informative Speech and Opinion section. Congratulations on everyone’s excellent performance!!

Learn Korean this summer! Elementary Korean I (KORN011) will be offered online during the 2022 Summer I session. The course is open to all Penn students, staff, and alumni, as well as students and working professionals outside of Penn. Please see the attached flyer for more detailed information. 

Two Penn Students Won Awards at the Mid-Atlantic Speech Contest

The Korean Language Program is thrilled to announce that two Penn students received awards at the first-ever Mid-Atlantic Korean Speech Contest held on April 2, 2022. A total of 26 presenters from 11 schools participated in the three levels of this highly competitive contest, and three Penn students – Charlotte Fox, Tess Christensen, and Julia Lammers – were selected to compete within each of these levels. Click to see the contestants’ bios and speech videos.
