Japanese Proficiency Tests (2021)

JLPT 2021 (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test

The 2021 JLPT will be held on the first Sunday of December (December 5, 2021), at select test sites and select levels only, including Philadelphia.

Test Date: Sunday, December 5, 2021

Location: Villanova University  (all levels N1-N5)

Registration: AUGUST 23, 2021, at 12:00 noon (EDT) – SEPTEMBER 12, 2021, at 8:00 p.m. (EDT), OR WHEN ALL SEATS AT ALL TEST SITES ARE FILLED – whichever is first.

** There will be restrictions in the number of participants and in the testing conditions. Some test sites will require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test in order to enter the test building; all sites will require masking (unless it is forbidden by the local government). By registering for the JLPT, you are agreeing to abide by the health and safety rules set by the test site that you select. Why taking JLPT?
JLPT certificates offer various advantages, ranging from recognition as academic credit and graduation certification at schools to preferential treatment at companies and acknowledgment of qualification in society.
If you are interested taking N1 or N2, we offer JPAN 481 as a preparatory course.
** The July JLPT is not offered in the U.S. at this time. **


NJE 2021 (National Japanese Exam) (closed)

National Japanese Exam (NJE), developed by American Association of  Teachers of Japanese, is an online, proficiency-oriented, standards-based and culture-related assessment tool for students learning Japanese.  If you take Japanese courses (JPAN012, JPAN022, and JPAN112) in the spring semester, we offer students to take NJE online via UPenn.

Standard Registration Period: 1/4/21 – 2/5/21  *Exam fee is $10 per student
Late Registration Period: 2/8/21 – 2/18/21  *Exam fee is $25 per student
Exam Period: 2/21/21 – 4/10/21
Level 3 Test (students in JPAN022 and JPAN112) will be administered online.
– Level 2 Test (students in JPAN012) will be administered online
