National Japanese Exam (NJE) 2023
Navmi Sharma (C’23) was awarded the 2023 EALC Student Prize!
“My paper titled “Fearing the Feminine: Understanding Female Monstrosity in Asian Horror” won the 2023 William R. LaFleur Memorial Prize for the best undergraduate paper in Japanese Studies, which is annually administered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Penn. This was a paper written under the guidance of Professor Kathryn Hemman in her class EALC 3252: Japanese Ghost Stories (Fall 2022). It studies the representation of women in East Asian horror movies and was strongly influenced by my interest in Japanese culture which is often known to be patriarchal and more socially restrictive towards women. For my research, I used movies such as リング and 仄暗い水の底から (Dark Water) for reference and am grateful for the years of studying Japanese that allowed me to understand the subtle cultural subtexts of the stories often missed by non-speakers.” |
