Former student after 20 years remembers our 9/11 class session

Bret stopped by to say hi at our open house yesterday. It was the 20th reunion of his graduating class (2004). As a sophomore, 3 years earlier, he was in my course on the holocaust (co-taught then with the great Penny Marcus of our Italian department). That was the fall of 2001 & yesterday he recalled for me that we didn’t cancel class that Tuesday morning 9/11 and some 90% of the students in the class came to our room and we talked about every possible issue way past the session’s normal ending time. Bret’s done a lot of major things in his life and career since then but that is a very very vivid memory, and he said he was glad he could find me on campus to recall it.
